Sixth Grade is a very important year as the children of Grant School spend their
last year of elementary school together. The children will say goodbye to their
early years of formal education as they anticipate their teenage years. The studies
will become more complex but the groundwork has been set. The sixth grade
class prepares for new learning experiences, new friends, new teachers, a new
school, and many new possibilities that the future will bring for years to come.
One chapter is about to close but a new chapter will open shortly.

Welcome the wonderful world of fifth grade. Mr. Lenart and Mrs Barrera' fifth
graders are busy all year long learning new and interesting things. Children learn
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, and
fractions in mathematics. They read great stories, like, The Lion, The Witch, and
The Wardrobe and Call It Courage.
They write amazing descriptive stories, persuasive paragraphs and informative essays in language arts. In social studies they gain knowledge of the creation, development, and growth of our great country. Finally, in science they discover the many
dimensions of the living and nonliving things on our planet.

As the children and I have anticipated, we are having a challenging and exciting year.
We are experiencing more responsibilities academically and socially. However, our
children are striving their best to achieve their goals of the year, which are reported
on the “Bunch of Grape Goals display” outside our classroom.
The following are our class goals of the year:
These are some highlights of this year. First, Ms. Doetsch and I are splitting the
teaching of Social Studies and Science. I am teaching Science, Ms. Doetsch is
teaching Social Studies. Second, our children will be working on projects in all
subjects to expand and enhance their learning experiences. Parents are certainly
welcome to help their children and to join in the fun! Third, our children will start
the Pen Pal program with the fourth grade students in North Brunswick in the near
future. Last year, the Pen Pal program was a tremendous success, which not only
promoted the value of friendship but also children’s interest in writing. Also, our
children are reaching out to people outside their own community. Children bring in
small change such as pennies and nickels, and we donate whatever amount we have
to Feed the Children, which is a non-profit organization that provides food,
clothes, and other necessities to young children in many parts of the world
We read the Feed The Children Newsletter and discuss the difference we can make
in other people’s lives. Last, please note that the third and fourth grade students
take the ASK in the month of April. It is very important to prepare the children to
do their best. One way to prepare for the test is for children to be responsible for
completing their homework and to review what they learn each day.
With students’ continuing motivation and parental support this will be a blossoming
year for our fourth grade students!
